Five Must –See Political Movies

While trapped indoors all weekend, huddling in fear of pseudo-hurricane Irene — sorry Jersey, but there really wasn’t much to her — I took the opportunity to catch up on some of the movies that I’ve missed over the past year or so. Number one on my list was George Hickenlooper’s contemptuous portrayal of disgraced D.C. “super lobbyist” Jack Abramoff.

So this got me thinking about other political movies from the past few years and whether or not many of them would make my ultimate desert island list. To my surprise, many would.

The list below represents, in no particular order, my favorite political movies of recent memory. Remember, this is my humble opinion. I’m sure many people out there disagree with me, and that’s OK — unless of course you’re going to try and tell me that something with Matt Damon should be on the list.

"Why does a dog wag its tail? Because the dog is smarter than the tail. If the tail was smarter, it would wag the dog."
Probably the single most cynical movie ever made about Washington politics. A must for any D.C. flack.

Capra and Jimmy Stewart at their best. Need I say more? Filibusters never seemed so dramatic.

A fascinating behind the scenes look at the goings-on around Nixon’s head-to head with British Journalist David Frost. Nixon is at once brilliant and manipulative — wasn’t he always?

Hilarious BBC comedy expose of Number 10 Downing St. in the run up to the Iraq invasion in 2003. From the makers of the brilliant “The Thick of it.” Scathing in its realism.

Never has a movie made lobbying look quite so cool — or ruthless. I think you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone on K St. that doesn’t want to be Nick Naylor when they grow up.
